1 Times Table Five-Day Plan
About 10 minutes a day. Each day names the facts to practice and one thing to do away from the screen. Tick the box when the day is done.
Day 1: the first half
Say 1 x 1 to 1 x 6 out loud, then skip count by 1s: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Tip: Multiplying by 1 means you have one group, so the number does not change. Say it as a story: one bag with 9 apples is still 9 apples.
Away from the screen: Put one spoon in each of six cups and count the spoons out loud: 1 x 1 is 1, all the way to 1 x 6 is 6.
Day 2: the second half and the turnarounds
Say 1 x 7 to 1 x 12, then flip each one: 7 x 1, 8 x 1 and 9 x 1 have the same answers.
Pattern: Each answer climbs by exactly one: 1, 2, 3, 4. The skip-counting row is the same as plain counting.
Away from the screen: Hold up one finger for each fact from 1 x 7 to 1 x 12 and say the answer before you count. The answer is always the other number.
Day 3: the 3 hardest facts
Say 1 x 12, 1 x 11 and 1 x 10 five times each, then go through the whole table once in mixed order.
Why these: Most mistakes here come from mixing up 1 x 12 with 1 + 12. Ask your child to read the sign out loud before answering.
Away from the screen: Make one pile of 10 blocks, one of 11 and one of 12. One group of any number is that number, so 1 x 12 is 12.
Day 4: the whole table, mixed
Ask all 12 facts of the 1 times table in mixed order, out loud. Repeat any miss at the end.
Away from the screen: At dinner, take turns asking any 1s fact, like 1 x 9 or 6 x 1. The fastest way to win is to just say the other number.
Day 5: the self-check
Answer the 12 questions below on paper, with no help and no timer.
Away from the screen: Keep the answer key face down until the end. Answer the 12 questions with a pencil, then check them together. Practice each miss three more times.
