12 Times Table Five-Day Plan
About 10 minutes a day. Each day names the facts to practice and one thing to do away from the screen. Tick the box when the day is done.
Day 1: the first half
Say 12 x 1 to 12 x 6 out loud, then skip count by 12s: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72.
Tip: Split 12 into 10 and 2: for 12 x 7, add 10 x 7 = 70 and 2 x 7 = 14 to get 84. Egg cartons are a handy way to show dozens.
Away from the screen: Fill an egg carton with dried beans and count by twelves, carton by carton, up to six cartons. That is six dozen.
Day 2: the second half and the turnarounds
Say 12 x 7 to 12 x 12, then flip each one: 7 x 12, 8 x 12 and 9 x 12 have the same answers.
Pattern: Every answer is even and is also in the 6 times table, since 12 is double 6. The answers to 12 x 5 and 12 x 10 land on 60 and 120.
Away from the screen: Count months on a calendar in years: one year is 12 months, so seven years is 84 months. Go on to twelve years.
Day 3: the 3 hardest facts
Say 12 x 7, 12 x 8 and 12 x 9 five times each, then go through the whole table once in mixed order.
Why these: 12 x 7, 12 x 8 and 12 x 9 are the slowest for most children. The 10 and 2 split turns each one into two easy facts.
Away from the screen: Build 12 x 7, 12 x 8 and 12 x 9 as a ten part and a two part on paper, then add the parts out loud.
Day 4: the whole table, mixed
Ask all 12 facts of the 12 times table in mixed order, out loud. Repeat any miss at the end.
Away from the screen: Hold up an egg carton and ask how many eggs are in any number of cartons from 1 to 12, in mixed order.
Day 5: the self-check
Answer the 12 questions below on paper, with no help and no timer.
Away from the screen: Keep the answer key face down until the end. Answer the 12 questions with a pencil, then check them together. Practice each miss three more times.
