7 Times Table Five-Day Plan
About 10 minutes a day. Each day names the facts to practice and one thing to do away from the screen. Tick the box when the day is done.
Day 1: the first half
Say 7 x 1 to 7 x 6 out loud, then skip count by 7s: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42.
Tip: Split 7 into 5 and 2: for 7 x 8, add 5 x 8 = 40 and 2 x 8 = 16 to get 56. The rhyme 5, 6, 7, 8 also helps: 56 = 7 x 8.
Away from the screen: Count by sevens on a calendar: one week is 7 days, two weeks is 14, all the way to six weeks, or 42 days.
Day 2: the second half and the turnarounds
Say 7 x 7 to 7 x 12, then flip each one: 8 x 7, 9 x 7 and 10 x 7 have the same answers.
Pattern: Skip counting by sevens has no repeating last digit for the first ten answers, which is why it feels harder than the 5s or 2s.
Away from the screen: Find day 49, 56 and 63 on a calendar by counting full weeks, then say the facts from 7 x 7 to 7 x 12.
Day 3: the 3 hardest facts
Say 7 x 8, 7 x 6 and 7 x 7 five times each, then go through the whole table once in mixed order.
Why these: 7 x 8, 7 x 6 and 7 x 7 cause more mistakes than any other trio. Use the 5 and 2 split until the answers come without working out.
Away from the screen: Write 7 x 6, 7 x 7 and 7 x 8 on sticky notes and put them on the fridge, a door and a mirror. Answer each one you pass.
Day 4: the whole table, mixed
Ask all 12 facts of the 7 times table in mixed order, out loud. Repeat any miss at the end.
Away from the screen: At dinner, take turns calling out a 7s fact for the other person to answer. Say the 5 and 2 split for any miss.
Day 5: the self-check
Answer the 12 questions below on paper, with no help and no timer.
Away from the screen: Keep the answer key face down until the end. Answer the 12 questions with a pencil, then check them together. Practice each miss three more times.
