Subtract 4 takes away a double of 2, so children who know subtract 2 can do it in two steps.

The pattern in the answers

The starting numbers 5 to 16 give the answers 1 to 12, and 8 - 4 = 4 is the one fact whose answer equals the number taken away.

Tip for the subtract 4 facts

Subtract 2 two times. For 13 - 4, 13 - 2 = 11 and 11 - 2 = 9.

The 3 hardest facts

Each starts in the teens. Count back to ten first, then take away the rest: 12 - 2 = 10, then 2 more makes 8.

Check with addition

Every subtraction fact is an addition fact turned around. Add the answer back to 4 to get the number you started with.

Untimed by default. A missed fact shows its answer and comes back later in the round.

Questions parents ask

Does subtract 4 need a new idea?

No. It uses subtract 2 twice, or the double 4 + 4 = 8 to find 8 - 4 = 4. Reuse the tools learned earlier.

What is a good warm-up for subtract 4?

Start with 5 - 4 up to 8 - 4, where the answers are 1 to 4, then add the larger starting numbers.
