Subtract 7 takes away almost a week, and its answers are easy when the matching addition fact is known.

The pattern in the answers

Starting numbers 8 to 19 give answers 1 to 12; in the middle, 14 - 7 = 7 is the double that halves 14.

Tip for the subtract 7 facts

Think of the add: 15 - 7 asks what plus 7 makes 15, and 7 + 8 = 15, so the answer is 8. Or go back through ten: 15 - 5 = 10, then 2 more makes 8.

The 3 hardest facts

Take 7 off a teen number and the answer is small. Bridge through ten: 16 - 6 = 10, and then 1 more makes 9.

Check with addition

Every subtraction fact is an addition fact turned around. Add the answer back to 7 to get the number you started with.

7 + 8 = 15 is a fact many children already know. The subtraction fact uses the same three numbers in a different order.
