13 Times Table Five-Day Plan
About 10 minutes a day. Each day names the facts to practice and one thing to do away from the screen. Tick the box when the day is done.
Day 1: the first half
Say 13 x 1 to 13 x 6 out loud, then skip count by 13s: 13, 26, 39, 52, 65, 78.
Tip: Split 13 into 10 and 3: for 13 x 6, add 10 x 6 = 60 and 3 x 6 = 18 to get 78. A deck of cards has 13 ranks in every suit, so a game of cards makes a fun way to count in 13s.
Away from the screen: Deal one suit from a deck of cards and count the 13 ranks. Count by thirteens as each new suit is dealt.
Day 2: the second half and the turnarounds
Say 13 x 7 to 13 x 12, then flip each one: 7 x 13, 8 x 13 and 9 x 13 have the same answers.
Pattern: The answers alternate between odd and even, starting with 13, 26, 39 and 52. The digits of 13 x 2 to 13 x 9 climb steadily in the tens place and sit one above the last digit of the 3 times table.
Away from the screen: Split 13 x 7 to 13 x 12 into a ten part and a three part, then write both parts and add them on paper.
Day 3: the 3 hardest facts
Say 13 x 6, 13 x 7 and 13 x 8 five times each, then go through the whole table once in mixed order.
Why these: 13 x 6, 13 x 7 and 13 x 8 are the facts children stall on, because the 3 part reaches into the high teens. Say the two small steps out loud before adding them.
Away from the screen: Write the three hardest 13s facts on index cards and quiz each other, flipping the card to check.
Day 4: the whole table, mixed
Ask all 12 facts of the 13 times table in mixed order, out loud. Repeat any miss at the end.
Away from the screen: Say the 13s in mixed order while waiting in line or riding in the car. Count the facts you get right in a row.
Day 5: the self-check
Answer the 12 questions below on paper, with no help and no timer.
Away from the screen: Keep the answer key face down until the end. Answer the 12 questions with a pencil, then check them together. Practice each miss three more times.
