2 Times Table Five-Day Plan
About 10 minutes a day. Each day names the facts to practice and one thing to do away from the screen. Tick the box when the day is done.
Day 1: the first half
Say 2 x 1 to 2 x 6 out loud, then skip count by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.
Tip: Think of pairs: 2 x 7 is two sevens, or 7 + 7. Socks, shoes and hands make good everyday examples for doubling practice.
Away from the screen: Pair up socks from the laundry and count by twos as each pair goes in the drawer: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.
Day 2: the second half and the turnarounds
Say 2 x 7 to 2 x 12, then flip each one: 7 x 2, 8 x 2 and 9 x 2 have the same answers.
Pattern: Every answer is an even number, and the last digits repeat 2, 4, 6, 8, 0 all the way up the table.
Away from the screen: Count shoes by the front door in pairs, then say each double from 2 x 7 to 2 x 12 as you put the shoes away.
Day 3: the 3 hardest facts
Say 2 x 7, 2 x 8 and 2 x 12 five times each, then go through the whole table once in mixed order.
Why these: Doubling 7, 8 and 12 trips up young learners because they cross a ten. Practice 7 + 7 and 8 + 8 until they come quickly.
Away from the screen: Make 2 x 7, 2 x 8 and 2 x 12 with dried beans, two rows each, and count the beans to check the answers.
Day 4: the whole table, mixed
Ask all 12 facts of the 2 times table in mixed order, out loud. Repeat any miss at the end.
Away from the screen: On a walk, call out a number and have your child double it out loud. Swap roles every five facts.
Day 5: the self-check
Answer the 12 questions below on paper, with no help and no timer.
Away from the screen: Keep the answer key face down until the end. Answer the 12 questions with a pencil, then check them together. Practice each miss three more times.
