4 Times Table Five-Day Plan
About 10 minutes a day. Each day names the facts to practice and one thing to do away from the screen. Tick the box when the day is done.
Day 1: the first half
Say 4 x 1 to 4 x 6 out loud, then skip count by 4s: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24.
Tip: Double it, then double it again: for 4 x 7, double 7 to get 14, then double 14 to get 28. Say both steps out loud at first.
Away from the screen: Count the legs of chairs around the table in fours: one chair is 4 legs, two chairs is 8, up to six chairs.
Day 2: the second half and the turnarounds
Say 4 x 7 to 4 x 12, then flip each one: 7 x 4, 8 x 4 and 9 x 4 have the same answers.
Pattern: Every answer is even, and the last digits cycle through 4, 8, 2, 6, 0. Every fourth answer is also in the 8 times table.
Away from the screen: Count car wheels in a parking lot or a picture book: seven cars have 28 wheels. Keep going up to twelve cars.
Day 3: the 3 hardest facts
Say 4 x 7, 4 x 8 and 4 x 6 five times each, then go through the whole table once in mixed order.
Why these: 4 x 7, 4 x 8 and 4 x 6 are where most errors land. The double-double trick turns each one into two easy steps.
Away from the screen: Fold a sheet of paper into four boxes and write 4 x 6, 4 x 7 and 4 x 8 in three of them. Say the double, double steps for each.
Day 4: the whole table, mixed
Ask all 12 facts of the 4 times table in mixed order, out loud. Repeat any miss at the end.
Away from the screen: Toss a beanbag back and forth. The thrower calls out a 4s fact and the catcher answers before throwing it back.
Day 5: the self-check
Answer the 12 questions below on paper, with no help and no timer.
Away from the screen: Keep the answer key face down until the end. Answer the 12 questions with a pencil, then check them together. Practice each miss three more times.
