5 Times Table Five-Day Plan
About 10 minutes a day. Each day names the facts to practice and one thing to do away from the screen. Tick the box when the day is done.
Day 1: the first half
Say 5 x 1 to 5 x 6 out loud, then skip count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.
Tip: Use the clock: the 7 on a clock face means 35 minutes, so 5 x 7 = 35. You can also take half of ten times the number.
Away from the screen: Count nickels by fives into a pile: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 cents. Then say each fact that matches the pile.
Day 2: the second half and the turnarounds
Say 5 x 7 to 5 x 12, then flip each one: 7 x 5, 8 x 5 and 9 x 5 have the same answers.
Pattern: Answers alternate between ending in 5 and ending in 0. Odd numbers times 5 end in 5; even numbers end in 0.
Away from the screen: Point to the numbers 7 to 12 on a clock face and say the minutes for each one: 7 is 35, 8 is 40, up to 12 is 60.
Day 3: the 3 hardest facts
Say 5 x 7, 5 x 9 and 5 x 12 five times each, then go through the whole table once in mixed order.
Why these: 5 x 7, 5 x 9 and 5 x 12 slow children down because they sit past the halfway point of the clock. Practice them with a real clock face.
Away from the screen: Draw tally marks in bundles of five for 5 x 7, 5 x 9 and 5 x 12, then count by fives to check each answer.
Day 4: the whole table, mixed
Ask all 12 facts of the 5 times table in mixed order, out loud. Repeat any miss at the end.
Away from the screen: In the car, read any number you see from 1 to 12 and multiply it by 5 out loud before the next sign goes by.
Day 5: the self-check
Answer the 12 questions below on paper, with no help and no timer.
Away from the screen: Keep the answer key face down until the end. Answer the 12 questions with a pencil, then check them together. Practice each miss three more times.
