Tip for the 5 times table

Use the clock: the 7 on a clock face means 35 minutes, so 5 x 7 = 35. You can also take half of ten times the number.

The 3 hardest facts

5 x 7, 5 x 9 and 5 x 12 slow children down because they sit past the halfway point of the clock. Practice them with a real clock face.

Turnaround facts

Swapping the numbers gives the same answer, so each fact below is learned once and used twice.

Questions parents ask

Why do the 5s come before harder tables?

They follow a pattern children can see and hear, which builds confidence before the sixes, sevens and eights.

What does half of ten times mean?

For 5 x 8, find 10 x 8 = 80 and take half, which is 40. It works for every fact in the fives.
