9 Times Table Five-Day Plan
About 10 minutes a day. Each day names the facts to practice and one thing to do away from the screen. Tick the box when the day is done.
Day 1: the first half
Say 9 x 1 to 9 x 6 out loud, then skip count by 9s: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54.
Tip: Ten times, take one away: 9 x 7 is 70 minus 7, which is 63. The finger trick works too: fold down the seventh finger and read 6 tens and 3 ones.
Away from the screen: Hold up ten fingers and use the finger trick for 9 x 1 to 9 x 6: fold down one finger and read the tens and ones.
Day 2: the second half and the turnarounds
Say 9 x 7 to 9 x 12, then flip each one: 7 x 9, 8 x 9 and 10 x 9 have the same answers.
Pattern: The digits of each answer up to 9 x 10 add to 9, and the tens digit is always one less than the number you multiplied by.
Away from the screen: Write the answers from 9 x 7 to 9 x 12 in a column and add the digits of each one. Up to 9 x 10 they always add to 9.
Day 3: the 3 hardest facts
Say 9 x 7, 9 x 8 and 9 x 6 five times each, then go through the whole table once in mixed order.
Why these: 9 x 7, 9 x 8 and 9 x 6 are where the tens digit trips children up. Remind them the tens digit is one less than the multiplier.
Away from the screen: Say 9 x 6, 9 x 7 and 9 x 8 as ten times, take one away, then check each answer with the finger trick.
Day 4: the whole table, mixed
Ask all 12 facts of the 9 times table in mixed order, out loud. Repeat any miss at the end.
Away from the screen: While setting the table, ask any 9s fact out loud for each plate. Your child answers before the next plate goes down.
Day 5: the self-check
Answer the 12 questions below on paper, with no help and no timer.
Away from the screen: Keep the answer key face down until the end. Answer the 12 questions with a pencil, then check them together. Practice each miss three more times.
