Tip for the 9 times table

Ten times, take one away: 9 x 7 is 70 minus 7, which is 63. The finger trick works too: fold down the seventh finger and read 6 tens and 3 ones.

The 3 hardest facts

9 x 7, 9 x 8 and 9 x 6 are where the tens digit trips children up. Remind them the tens digit is one less than the multiplier.

Questions parents ask

Does the finger trick work for 9 x 11 and 9 x 12?

No, it only covers 9 x 1 to 9 x 10. For the last two, use ten times take one away: 9 x 12 is 120 minus 12, or 108.

How do I check a nines answer?

Add the digits. If they add to 9, the answer is probably right for facts up to 9 x 10.
